Establish is a native Apple iOS and Android app that provides critical support and resources to New Americans who have settled in the Treasure Valley and greater Idaho. Created in partnership with Jannus, a not-for-profit health and human services organization, the app allows for instant communication with clients independent of a current telephone number or email address in the event of a public health emergency.
In addition to critical emergency communication between the aid organization and the client, the app provides a number of features as well:
Approximately 4,140 refugees have arrived in Idaho during the past five years. 80% of those arrivals speak the languages that we are targeting with the initial version of the app.
Refugees will have access to updated information about key issues and resources important to them such as housing, education and healthcare in a format that will be much more user friendly than printed packet of paper as has been done for years.
Community Partners will be able to share vital information with refugees (e.g. public health information, job fairs, community events, immigration updates, etc.) in a timely and widespread manner through the app’s alert and notification features that does not currently exist.
There will be a significant increase in the ability to integrate important information and resources into one place which will make it easier to navigate for refugees, especially those who are limited English speakers. For example, the potential to integrate bus route information into the app as well as clinic address and information can simplify the challenges of getting on the right bus to get to an appointment on time in many ways.
The app will be released (full deployment in Fall 2018) under a creative commons license to allow for adoption and distribution throughout the United States and Canada. Our goal is to have 500 New Americans using the app in Idaho by the end of 2019.
